Mini Lab: Mass
1. Materials
Get everything with your number: your substance, a plastic cup for weighing, a glass bottle, a cap, a funnel, a spoon, painter's tape, and a Sharpie.
- Title your page: Mass Mini Lab.
- Write the name of your substance.
- Write its formula. Not on the container? Look it up.
2. Identify
Metal, nonmetal, ionic compound, or covalent compound. Write which one it is. Explain why.
3. Structure
Metal or nonmetal: write the protons, neutrons, and electrons in one neutral atom (most common isotope). Draw an atomic model. Explain your proton and neutron counts.
Ionic compound: write the charge of each ion. Write the formula and show that the charges balance.
Covalent compound: draw the Lewis structure.
4. Match the number
- Add the periodic-table values for every atom in your formula. Show your work and circle the total.
- Zero the scale with the empty cup on it. Add your substance until the scale displays that same number.
5. Jar
Funnel it into the bottle and cap it. Three pieces of painter's tape. Front: the name on one, the formula on another. Back: the total from Step 4. Nothing else goes on the jar.
6. Photo
Take a picture of your jar and post it to the Chem Images Wall: chem-images-wall.vercel.app. Hand your jar to Ramsey.
Safety: Goggles on. Nothing goes near your mouth. Clean up spills right away. Wash your hands when you finish.
